The best feeling is when I try a new mix or maybe an entirely different song than I would usually drop, and the crowd just loves it! Getting that powerful and energetic reaction, and knowing that I read the moment so well and gave the crowd exactly what they wanted…..that’s just awesome!

To kick off a wedding reception dance floor, I usually find myself playing a mix of genres and decades at the start, which helps me get a better of sense of what the crowd is feeling on that particular night. But if I had to pick a single vibe, nothing kicks off the party like some 70s funk!

Every crowd is different, so I don’t have just one “go-to” song or mix for every event. For me, it’s more about the challenge of learning what the crowd likes over the course of the evening, and being able to build the energy that’s right for them, until the perfect song or set just flows naturally.

Prior to a wedding or other event, I like to find out if there are any songs that have a special meaning to the couple, their guests, or family and friends. Maybe a favorite party song in college, or something they used to jam to with their bestie on road trips. I always have a couple of those special bangers on hand that are perfect for refilling the dance floor!

I love all kinds of events, but weddings are definitely my favorite. I love the challenge of helping craft the perfect day for such an important moment in a couple’s life. Meeting with them ahead of time to explore their vision and then bringing it to life on the big day….wow, just the best feeling!

I had an event last year that booked me as their DJ, with ceremony in one room, cocktail hour in another, and the reception in a third. They also requested uplighting, sparkler fountains, dry ice fog, monogram, and upgraded dance floor lighting…Whew, was that an exhausting evening, but it was awesome bringing all of that together and pulling it off seamlessly for an unforgettable event!

Every wedding, every event, is unique. Meeting ahead of time with my clients and couples is absolutely essential to creating the best possible experience for them and their guests. I find out what their personal tastes are in music and level of DJ interaction, what their overall vibe or style is for the night, what sorts of music their guests might gravitate towards, what special moments they want to craft throughout the evening. All of it is important, and no detail is left uncertain in my planning phase.

I absolutely love using the Dance on a Cloud dry ice effect! Nothing wows the crowd quite like covering the dance floor in silky white fog in a matter of seconds. Pair it with the sparkler fountain effect, and you’ve got a moment no one will forget!

I always reach out to the other vendors prior to the event to introduce myself and share the timeline with them. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many wonderful photographers, planners, and other professionals, usually multiple times, and I pride myself on always taking a team approach to every event. Each vendor is crucial to making the night go perfectly, and coordinating between all the various moving parts is one of my favorite aspects of the business side of DJing.

I used to work as a dolphin trainer at both SeaWorld and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, taking care of some of the coolest animals on the planet, and entertaining and educating crowds about the importance of marine conservation.

I’ve known Adam for over 20 years, and it’s been an absolute joy to work with him and his company. Moxie Events has certainly grown over the years but has never lost it’s personal touch thanks to Adam and our little group of dedicated DJs who still love this job after all these years!
